With The Sweetest Thunder, lutenist Justin Glaie and Sweete Devils explore the musical world of the seventeenth-century Low Countries through the reconstruction of the mysterious Flemish theorbo. Inspired by paintings by artists including Rubens and Rombouts, Glaie brings this lost instrument back to life alongside voices, viols, traverso and muselar. The programme moves between sacred and secular music, offering an intimate portrait of Flanders’ rich musical culture and features compositions by Constantijn Huygens, Emanuel Adriaenssen, Gregorius Huwet, Jean De Macque’ Joachim Vanden Hove, John Bull and others.
