Valencian composer Vicente Asencio is one of the few musician who wrote extensively and constantly for the guitar without being a guitarist himself. His deep knowledge of guitar technique and language came from his friendship with Narciso Yepes, his erstwhile pupil, with whom he crafted new technical solutions for complex instrumental passages.
Some of the works recorded here exist in several versions (e.g. for piano and/or orchestra); Angelo Gillo, the performing artist, painstakingly collated these versions in order to reestablish and reintegrate some details of the other versions in that for the guitar. Among the most unforgettable pieces of the collection are the “homages” written by Asencio to musicians such as De Falla or Scarlatti, but also to poets as García Lorca; along with these, other pieces bespeak the deeply Valencian soul of the composer, who wrote a manifesto for Valencian music; finally, the touching spirituality of Suite mística, written for Andrés Segovia, constitutes a true journey for the soul.
