Recorded live in Livorno in 2008, this programme of ?Argerich?s two-piano Greatest Hits? finds her and her young Italian colleague in mercurial form. Mozart?s D major sonata and Milhaud?s Scaramouche fizzle, while an especially kaleidoscopic La valse is truly terrifying. It is only in Rachmaninov?s first suite that one misses the alchemy of Argerich?s partnership with Nelson Freire. The recording is somewhat harsh and overloads occasionally, but this is an exciting snapshot of what must have been an extraordinary evening. …

This is the clear pick of my crop this month. Argerich partners with the young Italian pianist Gabriele Baldocci in a wide-ranging programme. Each work the two pianists touch springs into life, and the Mozart bristles with a sheer love of performing. But it is in Milhaud?s Scaramouche that the two pianists will surely never be bettered, its glittering surface the very essence of the composer. Argerich and Baldocci seem perfectly matched, technically and musically. The opening of Shostakovich?s Concertino is orchestral in scale, monumental in the manner of a Bach/Busoni offering and contrastive to the madcap helter-skelter hijinks of the ensuing Allegretto.
