The flute and guitar duo is a particularly successful chamber music ensemble. It is, in fact, an almost ideal pairing, granting timbral variety thanks to the utter difference between the two instruments. They are also well matched as concerns dynamics, since none of them is among the loudest instruments of the Western tradition. This Da Vinci Classics album offers a fascinating selection of works which represent the variety of what could be heard in a refined musical salon of the nineteenth century. There are works by Francesco Molino, a guitarist and oboist originally from Ivrea, Italy, who resided in Paris gaining recognition there; by Mauro Giuliani and Fernando Sor, two of the best-known guitarists and guitar composers of all times, represented respectively by a famous Serenade and transcriptions after the vocal Seguidillas; and a selection of Arias transcribed by Anton Foreit after a successful comic opera by Adolphe Adam, underpinning – once more – the tight relationship between flute playing and singing.
