This is the third recital recorded by Matthias Suß on ‘his’ elegant Walcker organ (III/65) in Annaberg-Bucholz. Suß’s mission in this series seems to be to demonstrate the versatility of the organ above all, and none of the (chorale and Gregorian-based) repertoire here – from 20th-century France, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and Mallorca – suggests any obvious link with the organ type. Suß’s playing is very accomplished, his Alain Litanies (eccentric and even inaccurate) aside. Most convincing is the opening Langlais Rhapsodie gregorienne, but too much of the rest of the literature is too insignificant to warrant translation and in the case of the Janca, Spiller and Kropfreiter pieces …
