Alan Bullard: Wondrous Cross – The Chapel Choir Of Selwyn College

There are many versions of the Seven Last Words but Bullard’s, interwoven with well-loved hymns including the title piece, has a satisfying form, dramatic shape and meditative logic that few can match. It’s beautifully sung, too, with just the right balance of quietness and force. Elsewhere, as in Sursum Corda, the Selwyn College choir is able to push out more joyously, and the syncopated measures of The Feast of Palms are clearly a delight to sing. A major contributor to (and editor of) The Oxford Book of Flexible Anthems and Flexible Carols, Bullard balances directness with a watercolourist’s awareness of harmonic shading.
