Beethoven For Three: Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” & Leonore Overture No.3 – Yo-Yo Ma, Leonidas Kavakos, Emanuel Ax

Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yo-Yo Ma present Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” (Op. 55) and the Leonore Overture No. 3 (Op. 72b) on their fifth release in the “Beethoven for Three” series. Accompanied by violist Antoine Tamestit, they perform both works in new arrangements for piano quartet by Shai Wosner. Composed just a few years apart, Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” and the Leonore Overture No. 3 mark the beginning of Beethoven’s so-called “middle creative period.” Both works explore themes such as heroism and spiritual greatness. With the “Eroica,” Beethoven also reinvents the symphonic form during the Romantic era, thereby significantly advancing the genre.
