Berit Opheim Versto’s long experience in ‘folk’ and jazz forms are the key element here, allowing Thoresen to work in microtonal intervals and the strange, affecting major-minor glides of Tvetrall (Dual Tune). Its extremes of pitching make for a powerful climax to a recording that boldly intercalates two different works, the Nordic Council Music Prize-winning op.42 Vocal Sextet and the shorter, hymn-like pieces of Helligkvad, which draws on Baha’i texts. Thoresen dares to write ‘simply’; the opening sunprayer has only five notes, but what a depth of musical information and feeling is encoded in them!
