Scarcely known, these are both epic works which brim with ideas: the energetic opening motif of the sonata enthusiastically reworked and revisited, the slow movement Franck-like in its grave beauty. Premiered in 1908 by no less an artist than Ysaÿe, it is a tricky work to bring off, a feat the current artists achieve with aplomb. The quintet is even more rapt, dedicated to Vierne’s late son, and again the performance here more than does it justice. With warm, clear recorded sound this is enthusiastically recommended. …
