L’originalité, la complexité et la richesse des ½uvres pour piano seul de Claude Debussy sont telles qu’on ne sait jamais trop comment il convient au juste de les interpréter. Est-ce à dire pour autant que chaque pianiste les joue comme il l’entend, selon ses propres critères d’appréciation ? C’est probablement le cas, même si pour la plupart des commentateurs, certains interprètes sont beaucoup plus en phase avec le génial auteur de Pelléas et Mélisande et ont beaucoup mieux assimilé sa pensée musicale, par exemple Walter Gieseking, Samson François ou Jean……

The audience for these live performances – recorded last May at the Teatro Bibiena, Mantua – is commendably quiet except in providing enthusiastic applause at the end of each work. If one heard performances of this calibre in a recital room, one would not feel short-changed. On disc, however, things are not so straightforward. Dalberto, perhaps best known as a Schubertian, plays these works rather too much to the gallery, like an actor at a party projecting as if standing on the stage of a great theatre.
