This recording revives two neglected Italian nineteenth-century string quartets by the keyboard virtuosi Stefano Golinelli (an internationally esteemed pianist praised by Schumann and Hiller) and Vincenzo Antonio Petrali (the most influential organist of his century before Marco Enrico Bossi). Conceived in 1854 — although the final version of Petrali’s work dates from 1884 — the pieces reveal a dialogue between Italian lyricism and Austro-German instrumental models. Based on original sources and new research, these performances restore a missing chapter of Italian chamber music.
