Here is a generous, perhaps overstuffed, sampling of John Hosking’s bright, free-moving liturgical music, which always seems to suggest a natural improviser’s touch. A Royal Blessing, written for Prince George and tacked on at the end, is perhaps too much after the solemn beauty of the Requiem, but it won’t hurt the chances of a knighthood. Though both from 2012, the Bangor and Chester Services don’t sound off-the-peg but rather delightfully personalised. Hosking has an exceptionally good touch when writing for sopranos and he has two very good ones here. St Asaph is Hosking’s ‘home’ choir and organ, and both do him proud in the Te Deum.
