Jean Sibelius: Complete Violin Sonatas – Emma Arizza

Jean Sibelius’s activity as a performer was strictly bound to the violin, the instrument he had learnt to play in his youth and on which he had dreamed to establish an international career as a virtuoso. Even though that project never came to being, Sibelius continued to play the violin and to write a large flow of works for that instrument. This Da Vinci Classics album collects the Sonatas, Sonatinas and Sonata movements written by the composer throughout his career: from his youthful Sonata, which was his first attempt to tackle the demanding Sonata form, through a Sonata movement in D major, to the F-major Sonata, which is perhaps his first mature work, and up to the late Sonatina, suffused with nostalgia for what could have been and was not.
