This CD pays homage to John Marson (1932-2007), a harpist and composer, who studied at the Royal College of Music and later became the principal harp of the London Symphony Orchestra. Once his experience as an orchestra musician was over, he took on a solo career, which lasted for three decades and led him to play or premiere the works of such musicians as Stravinsky and Sinatra. In 1982, he took on the post of principal harp at the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Many of the works in this Da Vinci Classics CD are dedicated by the composer to his colleagues and friends, and thus can rightfully be described as incidental works, whilst others are longer and more structured. Given his network of friendships, Marson had his pieces premiered by some of the leading musicians of the world, who kept playing them during their lifetime, in solo and chamber music concerts.
