Leonardo García-Alarcón’s first large-scale composition, La Passione di Gesù (The Passion of Jesus), is described by the composer as a ‘canonic labyrinth in the form of an oratorio’. It serves as a profound homage to the art of counterpoint and to all the composers who have magnified this craft, with Johann Sebastian Bach as a central inspiration. Inspired by the Gospel of Judas, this “Argentine Passion” offers a contemporary perspective on the crucifixion, giving a unique and central place to the figure of the Apostle who betrayed Christ, as well as to the women in Christ’s inner circle: his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene. This world premiere recording features a stellar cast of soloists, including Andreas Wolf and Mariana Flores, alongside Cappella Mediterranea and the Chœur de Chambre de Namur under the composer’s own direction.
