There is no shortage of recordings of the Mendelssohn organ sonatas. The bonus on this recording is a second disc containing nine lesser-known works without opus numbers – mostly movements that never quite made it to the final publication of sonatas. The instrument, though not historic, is carefully modelled on the work of Friedrich Ladegast and tonally serves the music extremely well. My only criticism would be the muddy pedal, which lags behind the rest of the instrument. Eidsten Dahl renders Wm. A. Little’s scholarly edition with gravitas while carefully releasing plenty of energy in the flowing lines of Mendelssohn’s dramatic fugues. …
