Michele Carafa was a student of Cherubini and formed a lifelong friendship with Rossini based on mutual admiration. Carafa established a career in Paris through his association with the Opéra Comique, which is where he presented his masterpiece Masaniello. Uniquely, Carafa was a descendant of characters in his own opera, which was based on real revolutionary events that took place in Naples in the 17th century. The result is a well-paced historical drama, closer to French operatic models with limited reliance on bel canto and the influence of Rossini.
Michele Carafa: Masaniello – Nicola Pascoli
Masaniello (ou Le Pêcheur napolitain)
Ouvertüre
La pêche est excellente (1st Act)
Les pêcheurs de toutes nes rades
Allons, allons, il faut payer
J’ai bravé sur les flots
Le monde est ma patrie
Vous l’appeler vain et volage
Le ciel n’a plus d’étoiles
Si d’un pêcheur napolitain
Du ciel implorons la vengeance!
Entr’acte (2nd Act)
O ciel! qui l’eût prévu?
O fortune cruelle!
Gloire aux Napolitaines!
Ah! mon ami, que ces pensées
Fuyez, fuyez!
Les Turcs, inondant nos rivages
O fureur! ô lumière horrible!
On frappe, on frappe à cette porte
Entr’acte (3d Act)
Mon Dieu! quelle magnificence!
Des exacteurs l’orgueil nous lasse
Sous un ciel moins riant
Ils sont faux, oui, tout me l’atteste
Honneur à la vaillance (4th Act)
Un oiseau qui supporte
Ton c ur connaîtrait-il la crainte?
Mais quels accords ici se font entendre?
Masaniello, reviens à toi!
