in Opera Now (May, 2018)
The Royal Opera House was also the scene of Così fan tutte in 2016 in Jan Philipp Gloger’s production, which got mixed reviews. It’s certainly inventive and wonderfully acted, with multiple scene changes, and a hefty suggestion that we’re all at it: the four lovers arrive from the audience, clutching their ROH programmes, and we then meet the sisters in the Crush Bar. A furious Guglielmo even turns a probing light on the audience – yes, it’s us, but with better voices. What might have come across as a bit frenetic in the theatre works well on film as we move from opera house to bar to Garden of Eden …
