The unsuspecting listener might be forgiven for thinking they were entering Mozart’s operatic world as Harry Christophers extracts every ounce of drama out of the Mass in C major. In the conductor’s hands it’s a joyous work and comes as no surprise that it was used at coronations. The performers respond to all that is asked of them, turning it into an exhilarating ride. Lyrical American soprano Teresa Wakim executes Mozart’s flamboyant motet Exsultate, Jubilate with precision and aplomb, and the skilled playing of the Handel & Haydn Society’s period orchestra turns Haydn’s Symphony ‘La reine’ into a very enjoyable experience, full of light and shade that altogether makes for a …
