Organisms – Calefax

With “Organisms,” Calefax explores the majestic and mysterious essence of the organ—without a single organ in sight. By reinterpreting the centuries-old repertoire for woodwind quintet, they convey the instrument’s spiritual depth, improvisational roots, and theatrical flair using breath and reeds instead of organ pipes.

The result is not just an interpretation, but a transformation: Calefax becomes a living, breathing organ, revealing the humanity behind the grandeur. This embodies the wordplay of the title “Organisms”—a living entity that is also an organ.

From Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s “Fantasia Chromatica” and Nicolaus Bruhns’ imaginative “Prelude in E Minor” to the intimate final chorales by Johannes Brahms and Cesar Franck, and Florence Price’s Suite No. 1, which blends African-American musical traditions with romantic expressiveness, this album redefines the organ. It is presented not as a sacred machine, but as a living force of musical ingenuity.

In 2025, Calefax celebrates its 40th anniversary. “Organisms” follows their critically acclaimed albums “An American Rhapsody” (2023) and “Bach’s Musical Offerings” (2020).
