For nearly three decades, brothers Alfons and Aloys Kontarsky were the world’s leading piano duo. An American critic summed them up perfectly: “One pianist in two bodies.” Their musical and analytical acuity and intellectual insight remain unmatched to this day. From 1959 to 1983, they recorded numerous albums for Deutsche Grammophon, featuring works by composers such as Bartók, Brahms, Debussy, Dvořák, Ravel, Schubert, Kagel, Ligeti and Zimmermann. These recordings are now available for the first time in an 18 CD Original Jackets Collection, which includes three CD premieres. Additional recordings from the Philips, ECM and Koch Schwann labels are also available, as are live recordings from the Lockenhaus festival.
