Here we have a perfectly matched combination of the Czech baroque orchestra and choir, with soloists taken from the ranks of the singers. The purpose of the disc is to draw attention to the sacred choral music of 18th-century Czech composer Franz Xaver Richter, who spent 20 years as Maitre de Chapelle at Strasbourg cathedral. The Requiem and De Profundis date from that time, and this CD brings world premiere recordings of both works on period instruments. The works are beautifully crafted and very tuneful, making a welcome addition to the sacred repertoire. The short Sinfonia, which has its own gravitas, sets the scene for the choral music to come.
