Presto Classical lists 44 recordings currently available for Prokofiev’s largest, most challenging and arguably greatest piano concerto – No 2 (1912-3, reconstructed in 1923 after the full score was lost), an astonishing number given its one-time reputation as near-unplayable and expressively ‘difficult’. The coupling with Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No 1 (of which there are 251 versions available) follows a recent trend elevating this massive work into the league of large-scale Russian concertos, as with Wang (Rachmaninov 3) and most recently Gerstein (the 1879 version of Tchaikovsky 1).
