Scarlatti: Sonatas & Cantata – Giorgio Matteoli

If Handel and Bach are among the most important Baroque composers both of Germanic origin, even if one Englishman by adoption, Domenico Scarlatti (also born like the other two in 1685) is certainly among the greatest exponents of Italian origin in that world, also if in his case peregrine was the passage in Hispanic lands.Mysterious and prolific composer, adored and respected by the courts of all Europe, he found his highest point of expression in the form of the harpsichord sonata, coming to compose a very high number of them, to date 555 works of this genre are surviving, and leaving indelibly his imprint both in the keyboard music of the time, generating then many followers, such as Father Soler, and throwing a look to the future that is still collected today by a lot of contemporary music and beyond. Giorgio Matteoli at the helm of his Festa Rustica from here gives a very personal interpretation of it on the flute focusing on some “exceptions” of the Scarlattian production, or that small group of compositions that disregard the norm of the bipartite keyboard sonata and look more to a “baroque” structure, that is typical of the sonata for instrument and continuo (4 or 3 strokes like the concert). Considered among the most refined Baroque interpreters, in fact, he does not fail to emphasize the beauty, strength and innovative power that is perfectly expressed in the training he adopted and which allows you to listen to these works with completely new ears and eyes. A record that is going to constitute a milestone for every lover of Baroque music and that is clamoring to be listened to by all those who want to understand how an author of the past is able to speak to us even today with a completely contemporary voice.
