Schumann: Zwielicht – Matthias Goerne

With Zwielicht, Deutsche Grammophon extends Matthias Goerne’s successful Lied series with a Schumann program of high artistic intensity. Together with pianist Markus Hinterhäuser, Goerne dedicates himself to the Liederkreis, Op. 39 after Eichendorff, selected Gesängen des Harfners, as well as the Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart.

The recording combines three groups of works from different creative periods of Schumann’s life, tracing an impressive arc from the “Year of Song” 1840 to the late, existentially condensed songs of 1852. Goerne and Hinterhäuser have already presented this repertoire on major stages such as the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Munich Prinzregententheater.

For Deutsche Grammophon, Zwielicht is also a logical continuation of a profile that Matthias Goerne has distinctively shaped in recent years with top-class art song releases. The combination of a prominent artistic personality, an established Lied duo, and canonical repertoire makes this album one of the relevant new releases in the classical program of summer 2026.
