in Choir & Organ (Mar, 2017)
Revisiting its roots, the Handel and Haydn Society blows the dust offan H&H publication from the early 19th century of anthems by James Kent, Charles Avison, and Samuel Webbe, plus excerpts from Handel oratorios, accompanied only by organ and cello. Delightful solo singing throughout and a sprightly chorus with a wide and expressive dynamic range are partnered brilliantly by winningly tasteful and sensitive continuo. Recorded in warmly clear acoustics, this programme captures the energy, positivity and faith of time and place in music that is at one moment familiar and the next quirkily novel. …
