If Elgar were alive today, he might well be induced to write an enigmatic ‘C.G.’ for the current master of the Truro choristers, as he once did for a previous incumbent ‘G.R.S.’. Gray’s command of the choir is sure but undogmatic and there’s a freshness and individuality to this eclectic programme, which includes an evening service by Richard Pascoe and pieces by Graham Fitkin (The Christmas Truce, Lost), James MacMillan and Gabriel Jackson, along with other contemporaries. Celebratory records are often little more than souvenirs, not necessarily for listening.
