Founded in 1958, the Ulmer Spatzen Chor provides singing opportunities for around 240 children and young people. This disc features a group of the ‘girl sparrows’ who can bring a smile to your face and get your feet tapping. With their very able director, Hans de Gilde, they perform one of the most inventive programmes I have ever come across. It might be difficult to imagine music from The Hobbit with Brahms, Mendelssohn and Pergolesi, traditional Japanese and French music with ‘The Rhythm of Life’ from the musical Sweet Charity, Purcell with American Soul, and Rutter and Chilcott sitting comfortably with Roger Emerson’s amazing Cantate Brasilia! – but it really does …
