Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano conducts the LSO in two evocative works – Ralph Vaughan Williams’ expansive A Sea Symphony and Elizabeth Maconchy’s dream-like Nocturne for Orchestra. The first choral symphony of its kind by a British composer, Vaughan Williams’ blazing celebration of the sea transforms Walt Whitman’s visionary poetry into an epic orchestral voyage. Maconchy’s little-recorded atmospheric miniature, Nocturne, reflects her interest in central European modernism, far beyond the pastoral influences of her former teacher, Vaughan Williams.
