With iconic recordings by Barbirolli, Britten, Boult and Sargent, not to mention more recent versions from Hickox, Colin Davis, Elder and Rattle, Gerontius has been exceptionally well-served on disc. However, against such fierce competition this most recent addition conducted by Andrew Davis, surely our most distinguished Elgarian, need have no fears. Davis’s pacing of Elgar’s supreme choral work is perfectly judged and his realisation of the dramatic and spiritual facets of the score (Parsifal was one of Elgar’s models) is delivered with total conviction by his BBC forces.
