This recording gives a fascinating insight into the life and work of Zardini, a friar in the Franciscan community of Verona. The organ works are inventive, colourful and intelligently constructed, some using tone rows or modes in a similar manner to Messiaen. The finest example here is the impressive three-movement Sonata 1 composed in 1971, given a fine performance by Peretti. Less successful is the Missa In simplicitate, a Mass for upper voices, which is marred here by some questionable intonation.
