The Grauhof organ is perfect for this music – perhaps surprising some with its tierce mixtures – and it is here well recorded. The stately opening Prelude and majestic closing Fugue with the 32ft Posaunen underpinning the final pedal entry confirm this feeling, as do the beautiful smaller registrations of the manualiter chorales. However, tempi are not always convincing: the Kyrie/Christe chorales are rather rushed, ‘Dies sind’ BWV 678 is laboriously slow and ponderous, while a hurried ‘Vater unser’ BWV 682 leaves the lovely dissonances and intricate voice parts unclear.
