Telemann: 12 Fantasias For Flute Without Bass, TWV 40:2-13 – Rita D’Arcangelo

Georg Philipp Telemann’s 12 fantasies for solo flute were published around 1727/8 and today only one copy remains in Brussels. Curiously, on the title page of this copy, we read “Fantasies for the Violin, without Bass” and the name of the German composer is not even mentioned. In reality, however, once the score of these Fantasies is opened, it becomes quite clear that they were written for the flute: the range of sounds is simply impossible for the violin of the time, even if we know that the Baroque sometimes wanted to take it to the limit the capabilities of the tools. Together, these twelve works (“fantasies” in the sense of variety, according to the composer) become a magnificent itinerary through different styles, genres, gestures, atmospheres and images of the Baroque era. Telemann develops all the potential of the instrument and demonstrates its absolute technical mastery, inviting us to enjoy the beauty of this music and to savor its fascinating richness. The flutist Rita D’Arcangelo performs with vivacity and precision, deeply analyzing Telemann’s demanding style and performing it with technique and elegant virtuosity.
