This penultimate issue in the series once again mixes Intermezzos and dances from Brahms’ various collections with larger works, in this case three sets of variations and the coruscating Scherzo Op 4. It’s an approach that will not please purists, though in context its works very well, with the final pair of Hungarian Dances providing a delicious encore. Douglas’ playing is, as always, beautifully manicured, rhythmically alert and awash with colour. It may be a touch uneven in places and there are more vivacious accounts of the livelier individual tracks, but Douglas’ shaping of the three variation sets is masterly, as is his playing of the Scherzo.
